My First Foray into the Listicle Format

I’ve started writing for The Odyssey, and as such, new articles will be coming out once a week on whatever subject I happen to be drawn to (probably mostly Chicago, goats, and others). Be sure to check them out!

My first has just been published, so if you’ve ever wondered about the secrets to Chicago’s architecture, look no further. My article, 12 Unbelievable Facts I Learned About Chicago After Going On A River Architecture Tour, is just for you.

Maybe I’ll get around to reorganizing this website so all of these articles are easily accessible, but for now, be amazed at these unbelievable facts–and make sure to share, too!

My First Published Short Story!

Today a short story of mine, “Growing in the Basement”, was published in The Lab Review!  This was my first official short story publication, and I’m really excited about it. The intro is currently up in the Portfolio section of this site, so feel free to mosey on over and check it out.  You won’t regret it (hopefully)!

New content has been at a virtual standstill on here recently, but I’m hoping after graduation I can start putting more book reviews/original work/other stuff/ et cetera up. Stay tuned!

A Year of Quick Writes

One year ago, I decided to come back to this blog.  I’d created it in May of 2015, but it wasn’t until October when I really started working at it.  I started the daily Quick Write section, which forced me to think about my writing every single day.  I had to get some words on the page, even if it was just a few short three lines.  It helped jump-start my writing that had sort of fallen to the wayside since coming to Chicago.

And then the rest just kinda fell into place along the way.  Since then, I’ve added book reviews, short pieces of fiction, and gained some loyal followers (who I hope enjoy reading my stuff!).  It’s been an exciting year.

To add to all of this, I’m currently working on a novel with the hopes of finishing its next draft by December.  I’ve set up a strict writing schedule and I hope to devote most of my daily writing to completing this project.   I’m really excited to see how it turns out.  Really excited.

But because of this, here comes some bad news:  today’s quick write is my last.

Don’t totally freak out, though.  I’m just stopping the quick writes.  I’ll continue to add short fiction to my Portfolio tab as I see fit and book reviews will continue to pop up each week, now that I’ve finally finished Madame Bovary.  Maybe some surprises will appear in my Random Cool Stuff tab, too.  I don’t know.  I just know that as I work on this novel, these three liners are no longer going to be useful to add to my writing chops.  One year has been enough, and I have to expand to actual, substantial, potentially-publishable-someday-maybe writing.  Right now, that’s coming in novel form.

So, that’s it.  It’s been a year of Quick Writes, and now this year will be a year of other writing stuff.  Thanks for sticking with me!

P.S. – I’m thinking about journaling my writing process on here, as a sort of replacement to the quick writes.  Book reviews on Mondays and Weekly Writing Recaps on Thursdays or something.  I don’t know yet.  Like I said, some surprises will probably appear.  We’ll see.

A Lack of Reviews

So, as you’ve probably noticed by now, this is the second Monday that I haven’t posted a book review.  What’s up with that?

I’ll tell you what’s up with that.  I’ve taken up a new internship and, because that shouldn’t be reason enough to halt the reviews, I’m also currently reading Madame Bovary for a class right now and it’s taking FOREVER.

So, sit tight, and fingers crossed there’ll be a new review next week (but I’m not making any promises).

For now, enjoy the piece that’ll be posted in a few minutes here.  It’s about Carly Rae Jepsen and her connection with the multiverse.  I hope you like it!

Book Review Update

So I’ve been meaning to write a really awesome review for Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman, but it all basically boils down to this:  it was amazing, you need to read it.

I’d write it but I’m currently in the midst of preparing for a 3-week high school program at my college and what free time I’ve had this summer has been reduced quite substantially.  That said, book reviews will be much more sporadic through July 30th.  I’m hoping to write at least one review during that time, and after that, reviews will go back to a regular schedule.

Independence Day Blogging Break

Hi, all!

I spent this past weekend at a cabin in the Michigan wilderness, with no wi-fi and limited cell service, hence the absence of any posts this past weekend.  I spent most of my time just relaxing on the beach, so there wasn’t too much to write about anyway (okay, there was totally a bunch of cool stuff that I did, but now that it’s passed, I’d feel like I’m cheating the whole “one-quick-write-a-day” thing).

I did finish reading Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman, but haven’t written a review yet.  I should have it ready sometime later this week.

In the meantime, however, I do have new original work that I’ve been writing and editing and revising and et cetera for the past few days.  It will be posted shortly after this post is posted.  Post post post.  How many times can I fit “post” into that sentence. (Three.)

I’m hoping to have more original work posted with more frequency, but we’ll see how that goes.  For now, just have fun with this upcoming letter story.

And that’s it for now!  Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!
